The Irvington Grade School Board of Education met Monday night and Superintendent Dave Shulte says the school is getting $6,000 in E-Rate money, which is a discount rate. He explains that this is from taxes and surcharges that we all pay for our communications. Public entities can apply to get a portion of what they paid back. He says it will go to pay for phone, internet and like services. Last year they received $2,300. Irvington originally was using Casimir Pulaski Day at the beginning of the month as a make-up day, but weather was bad and they canceled school. Instead of making it up and messing with the school calendar, they will take a 3rd Act of God Day. This means the last day of school will be May 28th and Graduation will be on May 30th at 7 PM in the school gym. Spring Break will remain April 17th through April 21st. The Board approved getting a banner in honor of the boys’ basketball team making it into the Elite 8 this year. They join with North Wamac and lost to New Hope in the Elite 8. The banner will have the record, the coaches’ names and the players’ names. Schulte applied for the Illinois School Safety Grant and hope to receive funds to purchase more cameras with monitoring and recording capabilities. They posted a cheerleading coach opening. They posted it internally, but if no one applies, they will open it up to the public after 10 days. The school also applied to the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grant again this year, as they did not get it last year. This grant provides fruit and vegetables at snack time, not in the lunch program, a few times a week to introduce the students to new things and get them to try them. The school maintenance crew mows the school lawn, but the lawn mower is in bad shape, so the Board approve Schulte to apply for bids for a new mower.
