IUKA — A Saturday night fire destroyed a rural Iuka home and claimed the lives of three dogs.

According to the Iuka Fire Department, around 8:30 Saturday night, they received a report of a fire in the 5600 block of Swan Road just northeast of Iuka.

Upon their arrival, firefighters believed two people were possibly trapped inside the home that was fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters quickly discovered that was not the case.

However, three dogs inside the home were killed in the blaze.

The home was made of two mobile homes under a single roof, which made fighting the fire difficult. The roof of the structure ultimately collapsed.

Kell, Kinmundy-Alma, Odin, Salem, and Xenia firefighters provided mutual aid at the scene, while Omega Township brought their backhoe to the scene to bring down pieces of the structure.

Firefighters were on the scene until around 2 a.m. Sunday.
