MOUNT VERNON —  A 20-year-old Mt. Vernon man was arrested early Christmas morning following a shooting and high-speed chase and crash on the interstate.

According to jail logs, Maliq I Petties was arrested on charges of aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated fleeing/ attempting to elude police, armed violence, resisting a police officer, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, violation of bail bond, and on an outstanding Franklin County warrant.

Mount Vernon Police report that just before 1 a.m. Christmas morning, a patrol officer observed a man in the 300 block of South Ninth Street shoot another person.

As the officer approached the man now identified as Petties, he reportedly refused to comply with the officer’s commands and fled in a vehicle.

As officers pursued the vehicle through Mt. Vernon, speeds reportedly reached 100 miles an hour on Broadway.

Petties then reportedly entered southbound Interstate 57, but raced northbound from Illinois 15, striking a Mt. Vernon squad car in the process.

The collision damaged both vehicles and Petties reportedly exited his vehicle and fled police on foot.

During the foot pursuit, Petties allegedly reached into his waistband, and the pursuing officer responded with a single shot.

No one was struck, but officers were ultimately able to apprehend Petties and transport him to the Jefferson County Jail where he remains.

The victim of the initial shooting on Ninth Street was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. He was later transferred to a St. Louis area hospital.

The two officers were also taken to a local hospital and released after they received treatment.

The firearm was located at the scene and taken into evidence.

The Illinois State Police was called to investigate the discharge of the officer’s firearm and traffic crash,
