MOUNT VERNON — Betty Joe Huston, 86, of Mount Vernon passed away peacefully with family at her side at Carle Hospital in Urbana, Illinois on May 12, 2023, at 4:24 am. She was born January 9, 1937, in Drivers, Illinois to John and Eula McCoy.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Schuyler Huston; son, Renny Dale Huston; parents, John Jefferson McCoy Brown and Eula Elizabeth (Garrison) McCoy; sister, Mary Cheek; and brothers, Carl Brown and Ted Walker.

Betty is survived by her brother, Narrah McCoy Brown, still residing in Mount Vernon; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Betty met her husband, Richard at age 14, outside of the Granada theatre in Mount Vernon and one year later they were married on May 23, 1952. They had one child, Renny Dale, whom she referred to as a blessing. Betty and Richard were blessed to be married for 60 years.

Betty was a faithful member of the Lighthouse Baptist Church in Mount Vernon for the last 20 years and enjoyed making food to take to dinners and gatherings there. For all those that knew Betty, know that she was always entertaining anyone who ever came in the door. She has probably cooked more meals than anyone in Jefferson County. Betty and Richard worked for the local paper as a delivery person. She also loved to paint watercolors. You would never find Betty in any color other than purple. It was her favorite. She also loved red birds (Cardinals). If you ever played cards with her, you knew that her favorite card game was Rummy. She very rarely ever lost. Betty’s most favorite thing ever was her pictures. She had many, many photo albums from when she was a child to her most current. She had pictures everywhere, which showed her love for people. The pictures which she displayed in her home were often the start of conversations of her fondest memories.

A Graveside Service will be held Friday, May 19 2023 at 10:00 am at East Salem Cemetery with Reverend Don Rector and Brother Jerry Trotter officiating. Interment will follow. Memorials may be made in Betty’s honor to Families in Need, in care of Pam Brewer.
