Albert “Red” William Gentles, 99, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 6:34 am August 13, 2022 at Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor.
He was born February 7, 1923 in Okolona, Arkansas to the late Henry Lee and Florence (Rhodes) Gentles. Albert married Alpha Melton on February 11, 1944 in Morganfield, Kentucky. They were blesses with fifty years of marriage before she preceded him in death on July 26, 1944.Red is survived by his children, Anna Warren of Port Orange, Florida, Ralph Gentles of Mount Vernon, David Gentles and wife, Karen of Woodlawn, Charles Gentles of Mount Vernon, Todd Gentles and wife, Lisa of Montgomery, Texas, Mary Spiller of Mount Vernon; sixteen grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, Red was preceded in death by his siblings, Mattie Smith Peters, Amos Gentles, Lawrence Gentles, Alfred Gentles, Charles Gentles, Maggie Alred, Josaphine Buck, Birdie Gentles, and Susie Little.Red owned and operated Generals Drilling Company. He built Alta Motel in Mount Vernon and owned and operated that as well as, Fishing Temple Bar Resort in Arizona. He joined CCCamp at an early age and was a member of the Oil and Gas Association. Red was a lifetime member with the Knights of Columbus and was 3rd Degree. He enjoyed to dance but above all, Red loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and will be dearly missed.
A Visitation will be held Saturday, August 20, 2022 from 9:00 am to 10:00 am at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will begin at 10:00 am with Father Nick Junker officiating. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Illinois.
