This has already been the worst winter in decades and it may not be over. Illinois officials are urging residents to “Resolve to Be Ready” in 2014 for potential emergency situations. The Illinois Emergency Management Agency will make that easier to do by offering tips on preparedness and safety topics each month. IEMA Director Jonathon Monken says Illinois residents have been through flooding, tornadoes, wind and snow storms and extreme cold in the last year. He says no one can stop them, but people can minimize their impact by being prepared. Monthly topics include earthquakes, severe and winter weather, pet preparation, school and campus safety and cyber security. Officials say a first step is having an emergency, three-day supply kit with items such as water, non-perishable food, a first-aid kit, flashlight and battery-operated radio, medication and items for children, seniors, and pets.
