William Paul “Bill” Smith, 72, of Marlow, Illinois, passed away on December 18, 2024 at home with is family by his side. Bill was born on May 30, 1952 in Spencer County, Kentucky to the late James B. and Lillian (Wheeler) Smith. He married Janet (Johnson) Smith on May 3, 1971 in Mount Vernon, Illinois.
In addition to his beloved wife of 53 years, Bill is survived by his daughter, Hope and husband, Shawn Scott of Texico, Illinois; son, Paul and wife, Kelly Smith of Opdyke, Illinois; Brad Stephenson of Bluford, Illinois, who Bill treated as a son; and grandchildren, Gavren Smith of Opdyke, Madison (Scott) Long and husband, Jeremy of Rolla, Missouri, and Logan, Abigail, and Lincoln Scott, all of Texico.
Bill was the oldest of 14 children. He is survived by his siblings, Cindy Hileman and husband, Rick of Caledonia, Wisconsin, Nancy Carrico and husband, Mike of Mackville, Kentucky, Linda Duke, Donna Johnson and husband, Ronnie, Ricky Smith, Ronnie Smith, Janice Smith, Janet Smith, Robert Smith, all of Mount Washington, Kentucky; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his infant brother, E.L.; brother, Jim Smith; sisters, Bonnie and Kathy Smith; and nieces, Mellisa Coy and Michelle Duke.
Bill was a hardworking and gifted drywaller. He was the owner of Smith’s Drywall Service and served the Jefferson County area for over 50 years. Not only did Bill pass down his talent to his son and grandsons, but he also shared his knowledge and skills with several employees.
Bill was a loving husband, father, and papa. He showed his love best through his hospitality, and loved to feed everyone, especially from the grill, all year round. He was often found hovering over his guests, to be sure they liked their meal. Bill was also known for his beautiful vegetable garden. He called it relaxing work and never wanted anyone but himself to step foot in it. Bill found the most joy being a playful grandpa. The grandchildren share many memories of wagon rides, silly rhymes, and card games.
Bill leaves behind a beautiful legacy of family and friends well loved.
A Visitation will be held Sunday, December 22, 2024 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. A Funeral Service will begin at 2:00 pm with Pastor Shawn Scott officiating. Interment will follow at Black Oak Ridge Cemetery in Opdyke.
