MOUNT VERNON — The Mt. Vernon Police Department is reporting the second fatal pedestrian accident in just three days within one block on Broadway.

According to Police Chief Trent Page, around 8:35 p.m. Friday, his officers, Illinois State Police, Mt. Vernon Fire, and Litton’s Ambulance Service responded to the 4200 block of Broadway on a report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle.

ISP is investigating the incident.

Chief Page says the pedestrian was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He says the second fatality occurred around 9:30 a.m. Monday in the 4300 block of Broadway, a vehicle reportedly struck a pedestrian in the roadway.

That pedestrian was also transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

MVPD is investigating this incident but did call on ISP for crash reconstruction. This incident also remains under investigation.

All lanes of Broadway were closed for about an hour Monday due to the crash.

According to Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse, the pedestrian was a man in his late 50s.

Hayse says the pedestrian struck and killed Monday morning was a man in his early 60s.

The names of both men are being withheld at this time.
