MADISON COUNTY, Ill. — Dozens of fire departments as far as Odin, and Fayette and Effingham counties remained at a Madison County salvage yard fire Monday morning after responding to the blaze around 7 o’clock Sunday.
Dark smoke could be seen in Clinton County Sunday evening from the fire at 111 Salvage, in Madison County where several acres of salvaged vehicles are kept.
Highway 111 was shut down as crews battled the flames Monday morning.
It’s unclear what led to the fire or how far it had spread through the lot.
Firefighters battle the flames as the region is under an excessive heat warning, and officials say it could be days before the fire is extinguished. Temperatures hovered around 100 degrees on Sunday, with heat index readings near 115 in the afternoon and evening for much of the area.
Buses responded to the scene to provide firefighters a place to cool off in air conditioning.
