SOUTHERN ILLINOIS — A lightning strike from storms early Monday morning caused a fire that did heavy damage to St. John’s United Church of Christ between Metropolis and Brookport.

Authorities in Massac County say when firefighters arrived around 4:20 a.m., they found the church fully involved. No injuries were reported.

It’s also believed that the storms caused a building fire early this morning on East Main in Du Quoin.

Firefighters arrived around 4 a.m. and saw flames coming out of the roof and into the third story of the building. The fire also spread to another building next door.

No injuries were reported.

The fire is under investigation.
