NASHVILLE, Ill. — A Nashville, Illinois, police officer was stabbed overnight at a Hoffman Street apartment, which led to a five-hour standoff.

According to police reports, two NPD officers responded around 10 p.m. Tuesday to conduct a wellness check at an apartment in the 200 block of Hoffman Street.

A man in the apartment was reportedly going through a mental health crisis and when officers determined he needed to be placed in protective custody and took the man back to his apartment, he produced a sharp weapon and stabbed one officer in the neck. He then barricaded himself in the bathroom.

Other area departments, including Centralia PD and SWAT, responded to the scene where a standoff began, lasting until 4 o’clock this morning.

The man was taken into custody without injuries. The officer was transported to an area hospital by ambulance and is expected to recover. No other injuries were reported.

Washington County Jail logs show a 29-year-old Nashville man, Stanley E. Underwood, was booked overnight on charges of aggravated battery, and battery to a peace officer, along with attempted murder.
