MARION COUNTY — Marion County Resident Judge Mark Stedelin found a 27-year-old Salem man guilty Friday on all four felony counts accusing him of sexually assaulting a child.
Devon Q. Gibbs was initially charged with nine Class X felony counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child involving three different victims. However, Judge Mark Stedelin, who presided over this week’s trial, previously granted the defendant’s motion to sever the counts involving each victim into three separate trials.
The trial this week lasted just over one day and was the first of those trials and involved four counts against one victim. Gibbs is scheduled to be sentenced in the first case on August 23, 2023, where he faces between 24 and 240 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. A pretrial hearing in the second case is scheduled for the same day.
State’s Attorney Tim Hudspeth thanked Detective Trent Swagler and the officers of the Salem Police Department, the Illinois State Police Crime Lab, and the staff and employees of The Amy Center and S.A.F.E. “Together they were able to gather the evidence needed for me to prove the defendant committed these horrendous acts against a young child. I am truly happy we were able to obtain some level of justice for this victim and appreciate Judge Stedelin’s finding of guilt.”
