JEFFERSON COUNTY — A 20-year-old Mt. Vernon man was sentenced Thursday in Jefferson County Court to 18 years in prison after being found guilty of felony armed violence.
A Jefferson County jury found Jaylen Smith guilty last month of Class X felony armed violence. He’d remained in the Jefferson County Jail on $100,000 bond since Mt. Vernon police arrested him in December.
According to MVPD reports, Smith was arrested for alleged armed violence, manufacture with the intent to deliver between 1 and 15 grams of cocaine, possessing a stolen firearm and two violations of bail bond.
He was ultimately charged with Class X felony armed violence, of which the jury deliberated less than 20 minutes to find him guilty in March.
