The Washington County Hospital Board of Directors met Tuesday night for their monthly meeting.  Chief Financial Officer Elaine Matzenbacher presented the financial report and all the numbers were down for October.  There were only 17 admissions and there were 19 budgeted, and that is 6 less than September, while 7 less than last October.  Patient days were at 933 and there were 998 budgeted for.  It is only 3 less than in September, but 99 less than one year ago.  Outpatient visits for October were down from the 3,000 that were anticipated at 2,896, which was actually more than the 2,637 in the previous month, but 370 fewer than a year ago.  Emergency room visits was up in October from September, going from 217 up to 227, but it was less than the 234 anticipated, while it was 8 less than in October 2014.  There were only 23 surgeries in October, and that is not even half of the 48 surgeries anticipated.  It is also down significantly from the 46 surgeries in September, and down 13 from last year.  For the year, everything is less than budgeted for except for admissions and emergency room visits.  The hospital had a profit of $21,003 in September for the 1st time this fiscal year, but had a loss of $142,716 in October, while they had planned for a profit of $2,410.  For the year, the hospital has a loss of $595,870.   Chief Executive Officer Nancy Newby reported that a couple of doctors took vacation time during October and that accounted for more than half the month, so the personnel wasn’t there to do the surgeries.  Also, there was an increase in money paid out in employee health benefits as well, and as they have not been receiving state money, revenues were down.  She also reported that they are trying to do some cost reduction, such as holding off on travel and education expenses, as well as minimizing overtime.  The Board approved of this report.
