The Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to several accidents in the past week. A week ago in the morning, there was an accident on Interstate 64 near mile marker 37 in the westbound lanes that they assisted the Illinois State Police with. A vehicle driven by 50-year old Felicia R. Elu of Mount Vernon hydroplaned and went off into the median and struck a concrete abutment. There were no injuries to her or her 57-year old male passenger, but Elu was cited for No Insurance. Right about the same time, there was an accident on I-64 at mile marker 47.5 in the eastbound lanes, as a vehicle driven by 26-year old Brandice J. Heggemeier of Nashville hydroplaned, went off the highway into a ditch and then struck a tree. There were no injuries to the driver or 2 male juvenile passengers, but Heggemeier was cited for Having an Unsafe Tire, as the condition of it and the weather were factors in the accident. On Wednesday, they responded to an accident in the county as 19-year old Kyle A. Lee of Campbell Hill was driving a pick-up truck, but swerved to miss a deer and went off the road and struck a culvert. There were no injuries reported. Another accident on Wednesday was on I-64 near mile marker 48, as a vehicle driven by Diana Cromeans of Nashville struck a deer. There were no injuries reported. They assisted the ISP with an accident on Thursday on Route 153 at Honeysuckle Road in the morning, as a Jeep driven by 31-year old Ryan D. Meyers of Whittington, was northbound on Route 153 went he allegedly fell asleep. The vehicle went across the road, then off the road and struck a tree. He received minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital. Meyers was also cited for Improper Lane Usage. On Friday, the WCSD responded to an accident on Highway 51 near Posen Road, as a car driven by 47-year old Carlos L. Eaton of Elkton was going south, when a deer entered the roadway, causing him to strike the deer. No injuries were reported. They then assisted the ISP with an accident later in the day on Route 177 at I-64 overpass. A vehicle driven by 31-year old Cody E. Basciano of Troy, was turning left onto the on-ramp to go east, when she pulled out into the path of a van driven by 78-year old Georgine A. Fields of Centralia, who was going west on Route 177. Fields sustained incapacitating injuries and was taken to a local hospital, while Basciano was not injured. She was cited for Failure to Yield Turning Left. Then, deputies responded to an accident on Route 127 near Walnut Hill as a car driven by 52-year old Louis Menn of Fairview Heights struck a deer. There was no mention of any injuries. As evident by this report, motorists need to be alert for deer on the roads at this time of the year. The Nashville Police Department responded to some accidents in the past week as well. Last Monday morning, there was an accident at the intersection of North Mill Street and East Saint Louis Street, as a pick-up truck driven by 22-year old Brandon M. Vandeloo of Bartelso, could not stop in time and a pick-up truck going with the green light, that was driven by 66-year old Carl A. Kary, struck the trailer on Vandeloo’s truck. There was no mention of any injuries or citations issued. Then a week ago, there was an accident on McDonald’s parking lot involving a vehicle and a light pole. Again, no injuries or citations issued. On Wednesday, they assisted the Washington County Sheriff’s Department and the Illinois State Police with an accident on Route 127, south of town and one on Interstate 64. The NPD also responded to an accident on Route 127, just north of Mockingbird Road, as a vehicle driven by Kayla Wesselmann of Hoyleton did not stop in time and struck the rear of a vehicle driven by Chris Harper of Hoyleton. No injuries or citations mentioned. Later that morning, there was an accident on South Mill Street and East Saint Louis Street, as a semi-truck driven by Brock Mellendorf of Teutopolis was backing up, but struck a vehicle driven by Lori Wilder of Nashville. Again, no injuries or citations reported.
