The Oakdale Grade School Board of Education met on Monday night and Superintendent Charles Peterson says they had a Tentative Budget Hearing beforehand and then the Board approved of it during the regular meeting. He says it is approximately $70,000 in the hole, but some of that is because they will not receive all of their funding and they had to hire an extra special education teacher for this year, plus other expenses they received money for last year, but is being paid out this year. Peterson reported that they are trying something new to cut down on detentions, as they implemented a no detentions incentive program for the students and if they can make through so many days, then there are incentives for the kids to get a little extra recess during P.E. or lunch. It seems like it is beginning to work as they only had 2 detentions in August, while they had about 9 last year. Also, they are going to have quarterly assemblies at the end of each quarter to recognize students with perfect attendance, those with good behavior and those with good grades, as they are putting in the extra effort. The new boiler is completely installed and they will be ready for the cold weather. The current enrollment is at 77 and has not changed since the beginning of the school year. Last year they had right around 79 students, so there is not much difference. The Board approved of sending an application in for Recognition of Schools, which is an annual process. Oakdale will have Grandparents’ Day on October 9th with breakfast at 8:30. Then they will get out at 11:30 as it is Homecoming at Nashville High School.
