The growing student population at a Belleville college that operates from a converted high school has some neighbors wary of efforts to build more housing. The Belleville News-Democrat reports that Lindenwood University-Belleville is seeking a zoning change to expand a three-student limit in 36 homes and apartment buildings it owns. The Belleville campus is affiliated with private Lindenwood University in Saint Charles, Missouri. The university bought the former Belleville West public high school in 2003. It has since grown from a night school and commuter college to one with nearly 1,500 full-time students. 1,000 of those students live in university-owned homes, apartments and dormitories. Alderman Mike Buettner says the city should reverse a 2012 ordinance that allows up to 16 students to live in some university-owned homes.
