The Southern Illinois University Board of Trustees has approved a 5 percent tuition hike for incoming undergraduate students next year.  Tuition will increase by $420 for Illinois residents and $750 for non-residents, bringing tuition totals to $8,835 for in-state students and nearly $21,790 for out-of-state students.  However, the tuition bills for existing students will remain unchanged.  Board Chairman Randal Thomas says school officials don’t want to raise tuition, but it must be done since Governor Bruce Rauner has proposed cutting state university funding by 31.5 percent next year.  The Southern Illinoisan reports the tuition hike is expected to generate an additional $162,000 in revenue for the school.
