The Hoyleton Grade School Board of Education met Thursday night and Superintendent Elaine Hemker says it was a long meeting, as they walked through all the buildings to find out what needs to be done by the current and new Board, before the transition to Nashville Grade School. This would be anything they can take action on as far as the existing facilities. They talked about how they plan to dispose of things, whether that be an auction or sale. They have been working with the NGS Board, while she has been working with NGS Superintendent Mike Brink, and they are all in agreement on anything they can do to the transition in advance, will make it less Nashville will have to do once July 1st comes. Also, there will be a special meeting to install the new members of the Board, tentatively set for April 30th, after the election results are finalized. There is still one spot not decided, as there is a tie between write-in candidates for the unexpired 2-year term with 3 votes each for Charlene Herrmann and Brooke Kehn. For the full 4-year term, Lester Kretzer II received 11 votes, while Lisa Ferrell and Mark Habeck each got 8 votes, as those three have been elected. Hemker also reports that the school board will not have a district anymore at the end of June, but some of them will be part of the NGS School Board in an advisory role without voting powers, to help make sure the Hoyleton students are transitioning well. The Board approved the prevailing wage on any work that gets done at the school. The Board approved of field trips for Kindergarten through 6th grade to the Saint Louis Science Center, while the 7th and 8th grades go to Holiday World. Also, the 8th graders had a fundraiser and will do something with that money on graduation practice day. Graduation for the 5 eighth graders is on May 26th at 7 PM in the gym. The last day of school is on May 28th. Superintendent Elaine Hemker reported that their blood drive earlier this month resulted in 12 contributors being accepted to give blood, while others were not eligible. Cardinal Day is on May 11th with Fredbird and a guest speaker coming to Hoyleton. Trinity Lutheran students are also invited to attend. The Smile Illinois Dental Program will be making a stop at Hoyleton Grade School. Students are required by law to have dental checkups by certain grade levels and this program helps to provide them free of charge. Hemker says they get their teeth cleaned by traveling professionals and get a gift, such as toothbrushes and toothpaste. If there are problems or concerns, the parents will get a report. She also reported they had their share of problems with the PARCC test. Only the 7th and 8th graders took it online, while the 3rd through 6th graders did the paper and pencil test. They had similar problems as everyone else with being kicked off and JAVA errors, but they got through it and are ready for the end of the year test. In terms of school size, there has been no change in the past month.
