The Oakdale Grade School Board of Education met Monday night and Superintendent Ryan Wamser says they were very pleased to get a large obstacle out of the way so quickly, as the Board and teacher’s union came to an agreement on a 4-year collective bargaining contract that will give the teachers a competitive pay and do what is right for the students. He believes the school will also be able to remain financially sound and both sides are happy. The contract begins the day before school begins in August and runs through 2018. Wamser was also happy that the process was quick, as it began in early February and was signed this week, while other schools are still working on their contracts. He said Graduation has been set for Tuesday, May 27th, but the start time has not been set for the 7 graduates. The Board tabled a decision on who will do their annual audit and they will go over the 2 proposals they have received. They have begun talking about bus contracts and that might include extending the contract with Boges. Currently there are 2 bus routes for Oakdale students. Wamser then talked about the harsh weather and what that meant to an increase in snow days. One possibility discussed was snow routes, but there are problems with that idea. This is due to the rural area and that it would be difficult for parents to get their students to the pick-up place anyway. With the size of the school being small, a few students not able to make it on snow route days would affect the classroom, as well as financially, as a few of these in a month could decrease state aid. Therefore, at the beginning of next school year, the school will put out the different scenarios for snow days and how that will impact the school calendar. Wamser said they rescheduled Senior Volleyball Night from last night to next Tuesday night at 6 PM as they take on Trinity Lutheran in Hoyleton. This was done to allow students and parents to go cheer on the Nashville Hornets in Carbondale in the Super Sectional. Also, next Monday night is the Science Fair at 6 PM and Kindergarten screening will be on March 25th. Call the office at 329-5292 for more information.
